Brno - The police want to use part of the barracks in Brno-Židenice as the headquarters of their city directorate. Police representatives will discuss the long-term plan with the new city leadership. The estimated total costs for the revitalization of the area are in the hundreds of millions of crowns, said South Moravian police director Leoš Tržil in an interview with journalists today.
Approximately half of the barracks area is owned by the state, and the Ministry of Defense manages the property. The other half towards Rokytová Street belongs to the city. The police would like to utilize about two-thirds of the buildings from the municipal part. They already own three buildings and want to negotiate for others.
Various departments of the Brno city directorate are currently located in different places, which is neither convenient nor efficient for the police or visitors. If the police were to acquire a cohesive area, they could free the currently used buildings for other purposes.
"We would also bring some necessary services closer to the city," said Tržil, mentioning, for example, the traffic inspectorate which is currently located on Renčova Street in Řečkovice. The Židenice barracks are, according to Tržil, easily accessible, and the transport hub Stará Osada is nearby.
The so-called Svatopluk Barracks in Židenice date back to the 1920s and originally served the Czechoslovak infantry. In January 1933, an unsuccessful fascist coup took place there. After World War II, the extensive area also served military education.
