Brno – The Brno city council approved today the amended terms for the construction of the Janáček Cultural Center. This document was previously approved by the board of Brno Communications in January. Brno can now start selecting a company to build the concert hall. This was announced in a press release by the Brno city hall. City representatives in recent weeks have faced criticism from opposition councilors and cultural figures for delaying the construction of the concert hall.
The need to amend the tender documentation was explained by the city due to a time shift and market stabilization. "The aim is to reduce the overall cost, accelerate construction, including the fastest possible opening of the garages, and broaden the potential pool of bidders for the contract. The estimated value of the public contract is set at 2.4 billion crowns excluding VAT, including reserved changes in commitment, such as inflation; without these, it is 2.1 billion. It is also important to shorten the maximum construction period from 40 to 36 months," said Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS).
The new tender documentation also reflects the anticipated change in the building permit related to the agreement reached with the owner of the adjacent International hotel, HIB DEVELOPMENT. "The adjustment of the project documentation for the construction, which includes the removal of the transformer station and a comprehensive solution for the newly created space, also required some time," Vaňková stated.
The construction will include technical equipment for the Janáček Cultural Center, such as sound systems, interpreting booths, lighting, and projection equipment. Suppliers for the interiors and organs, which will be custom-made for the new hall, will be selected separately in the competition. The contract will be planned in the form of a restricted procedure. In the first round, the qualification prerequisites of all bidders will be assessed, followed by those who meet them being invited to submit final offers.
For the construction of the hall, the city had previously selected a plot of land adjacent to the Besední dům between Veselá and Besední streets. So far, only an underground parking lot has been built there. The hall is to be constructed above it, with facilities for the Brno Philharmonic inside.
