Brno – A scaled acoustic model of the Janáček Cultural Center, costing two million crowns, arrived today at the exhibition grounds in Brno. In comparison to the planned concert hall, it is at a scale of 1:10, said Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS) to reporters. According to her deputy Tomáš Koláčný (Pirates), the city will use the model to verify the acoustics calculated for the actual building. The hall will cost two billion crowns and offer 1,200 seats for listeners. The bidding for the contractor should begin at the end of the year.
The wooden model arrived at Pavilion A of the exhibition grounds. "The scaled-down version of the hall at a ratio of 1:10 was created since last autumn in Mnichovo Hradiště in a workshop specialized in acoustic models. The object measures five meters by 3.5 meters and has a height of three meters," Vaňková stated.
According to Koláčný, the model is hermetically sealed and will be filled with nitrogen. "Sound propagates in it at a corresponding rate relative to the scale of the model, that is, exactly ten times slower than in the air. The aim of the measurements is to verify that the calculated shape of the hall and the materials used ensure perfect acoustics," said Koláčný.
The model contains 1,200 figurines to simulate the audience in the hall. "They simulate the acoustic absorbency of the listeners. The mere presence of people also changes the acoustic parameters of the space," Koláčný noted. Testing is expected to last about three months, according to councilor Marek Fišer (Pirates). After that, the city plans to show the model to the public.
The concert hall for two billion will be located at the corner of Besední and Veselé streets. The Brno Philharmonic, which currently lacks concert spaces, will have its facilities there. Construction should begin next year. The city will pay nearly a billion, 600 million crowns are requested from the Ministry of Culture, 100 million should come from the South Moravian Region, and over 300 million has already been provided by the city company Brněnské komunikace, which first built underground garages with almost 200 spaces at the site. However, the garages are not yet accessible; construction of the above-ground part is awaited.
