Narrow alleys, terraces, courtyards, birdhouses, and a long narrow square. This is Úštěk. Living in Úštěk means being part of history. With its picturesque landscape and beautiful historic environment, it seems to be an ideal place to live.

Where to live in Úštěk?
One option is to find the inner reserves of the city. This would not disrupt the surrounding landscape nor would it create new neighborhoods detached from the center and history of the city. Such an intervention would naturally revive the city instead. Úštěk does not have many free reserves in its center. The location of the town on a promontory is the reason for the maximum utilization of almost every free space. Nevertheless, I found several free spots at the western end of the square, where part of the town has long Gothic plots.

Place
The western part of Úštěk was established in the 16th century as an extension of the original city fortifications. First, two rows of houses were built along the main road heading west. The row of houses on the southern side of the road then expanded with an additional row of economic buildings, thus taking advantage of the southern slope. Today, these houses are not suitably utilized, and some do not even stand anymore. Only the row of houses facing the street is inhabited. In this project, I am dealing with the transformation of plots for housing so that comfortable living can be provided in both rows of houses.

Plots
The long Gothic plots have two houses and a courtyard between them. Behind the back house is the southern slope with a garden and a hillside, where hops used to be grown. The courtyard is utilized in the project for parking and as a semi-private garden and place for outdoor activities. The slope serves as a communal orchard for both houses. The entire plot is passable and ends at a new path along the stream.

Houses 2 x 2 x 2
I have designed two family houses and two family duplexes. Families share semi-private spaces together. These plots are most suitable for families of long-time friends, for whom the courtyard and garden space can offer a place for joint gatherings. Atria provide lighting for the houses and privacy for the families.
