In response to ongoing urbanization and the growing global population, cities are reacting by building upwards. Depending on their geographical location, both residential and commercial high-rise buildings must withstand extreme weather conditions, such as strong winds or structural movement. Developers, architects, and manufacturers call for energy efficiency, sustainability, and flexible building designs. In response to these demands, Schüco introduced the new Schüco UDC 80 (Unitised Dynamic Construction) aluminum facade system platform at the BAU 2019 trade fair, featuring three types of structures that allow for the offset of elements. This provides designers with significant creative freedom when combining glazed and opaque elements that do not need to connect vertically but come with all the advantages of modular construction. The Schüco UDC 80 facade elements can be horizontally offset to create an individual building design
The Schüco UDC 80 aluminum facade is part of the UDC facade platform. The tested system components form the basis for a wide range of standardized solutions as well as custom-modified modular facade constructions. The product portfolio of Schüco UDC 80 aluminum facades includes a diverse array of facade variants with a visible frame. The visible width of the profiles is only 80 mm for all elements, allowing for maximum transparency. Additionally, covering strips are available in various designs that enable the visual reduction of the visible width to just 65 mm while maintaining the same high load-bearing capacity of the structure. Large-format elements can measure up to 3 x 4 meters and weigh up to 1000 kg. Another advantage of the system is the substantial creative freedom in design thanks to the horizontally offset elements, where glazed elements do not need to connect vertically, as in traditional post-and-beam constructions, and further enabled by the use of diagonal window mullions or opaque elements. The opaque parts of the facade can be made from a wide range of materials, such as metal panels, printed glass, or natural stone. They can be integrated into the facade module either as recessed or offset, thus creating striking contrasts using system connection components. In combination with balconies, the inserted, mechatronically controlled sliding systems ASE 80 TC (Aluminum Sliding Element, construction depth 80 mm, tight closing) create a functional design for high-rise residential buildings. When utilizing openable elements that span the full height of the room, it is necessary to ensure a robust safety barrier in the form of transparent safety fencing attached directly to the profile, which visually blends with the modular facade. The Schüco UDC 80 aluminum facade also sets a new standard for energy efficiency, with Uf values up to 0.86 W/(m²K) considering the influence of connectors. Together with the new Schüco ZIP Design Screen textile shading, which is hidden, wind-resistant and is fixed into guide rails integrated within the profile, demands for cooling the building can be further reduced while maintaining an attractive appearance of the facade.
The Schüco UDC 80 CV aluminum facade features tilt-and-slide wings
The Schüco UDC 80 aluminum facade can be combined with the Schüco UDC 80 CV facade, which has hidden top-opening and parallel sliding wings. Both modular facades look the same from the outside. When viewed from the inside, the UDC 80 CV system differs only by the window handle for the opening element.
The Schüco UDC 80 SG aluminum facade appears very impressive from the outside due to its generous fully-glazed look; from the inside, it looks like a traditional modular facade with a profile visible width of only 80 mm. It gives designers free rein due to the horizontally offset elements and the use of opaque elements or diagonal window mullions. With the Schüco AWS 114 window series, large-format inserted elements in the form of tilt-out or parallel sliding windows can be realized. The version with stepped insulating glass ensures perfect integration with the facade, while the modular construction guarantees very efficient production and assembly.
