Havířov - The Railway Infrastructure Administration (SŽDC) has begun the reconstruction of the dispatcher building of the railway station in Havířov in the Karviná region. It will cost 137 million crowns and will last for two years, during which the layout of the building will also change significantly. This was announced today by SŽDC spokesperson Marek Illiaš.

"The transformation of an outdated and operationally unsuitable building into a facility that meets the requirements and standards of the 21st century is beginning,” stated the general director of SŽDC, Jiří Svoboda. The construction will be carried out by the companies OHL ŽS and Tomi Remont.

The building will have a new facade, including windows and doors, and the connections to the engineering networks, central heating, and electrical wiring will be reconstructed. New sanitary facilities, barrier-free elevators, a new informational orientation system, and guiding elements for the visually impaired will be created.

The renovation of the dispatcher building will be carried out in two phases. "First, the reconstruction of the existing operational and administrative section and adjacent hard surfaces, including the outdoor staircase, will take place. The aim of the work is to create a new passenger check-in hall and new facilities for carriers (customer service personnel of Czech Railways and RegioJet)," Illiaš stated.

In the second phase, the current check-in hall and restaurant will be repaired, including the glass wall and roof. The ticket offices will relocate to the new check-in hall, and new toilets for passengers will be created in the place of the current ticket counters.

SŽDC intends to modernize the railway station itself in 2021 and 2022. The reconstruction of the dispatcher building will be followed by a project from the city of Havířov, which will redesign the area in front of the station. They aim to start this project later this year.

The revitalization of the area in front of the station will include the construction of a transport terminal and related infrastructure, including parking spaces. "This is an exceptional project that will forever change the gateway to our beautiful city. I am happy that what has been impossible for 30 years has been successfully pushed through. Havířov deserves such an investment,” stated Mayor Josef Bělica (ANO).

The station building in Havířov was constructed between 1964 and 1969 in the so-called Brussels style, according to the design of architect Josef Hrejsemnou. Sculptor Václav Uruba also contributed to the design. The western wall of the entrance hall is covered by a colorful glass mosaic with an area of 65 square meters by glass artist and painter Vladimír Kopecký. In the past, there were considerations for the demolition of the hall, which triggered a wave of discontent.
