Prague - The Railway Administration (SŽDC) has announced a public contract for the renovation of the historic Negrelli Viaduct in Prague. The cost of the work, which is expected to last 39 months, is estimated by the railway administration to be 1.19 billion crowns excluding value-added tax. The tender is related to the modernization of the track from the capital to Kladno. This follows information published in the Public Procurement Bulletin.

The assignment indicates that the goal of the renovation is to eliminate local speed restrictions on the viaduct, increase the capacity of the track, and adapt it to noise and vibration limits. "The construction is closely linked to the modernization of the Prague - Kladno line, which it will subsequently enable to carry out. The aim is to maximize the current track speed," wrote SŽDC.

During the reconstruction, according to the server E15.cz, non-original constructions and extensions of the viaduct are to be removed. The renovation has reportedly been postponed for several years, with its start mentioned back in 2012 by then-director of SŽDC Jiří Kolář. At that time, he estimated costs at 800 million crowns.

SŽDC aims to electrify the current single-track line to Kladno and expand it with an additional track. A new branch to the airport is planned. After the reconstruction, passengers from the city center should be able to reach the airport in less than half an hour.

The Negrelli Viaduct is the first railway bridge in Prague over the Vltava River and the second oldest standing bridge in Prague. It connects Masaryk's Station through Štvanice Island with Bubny. The 1100-meter-long structure, which was opened for operation at the beginning of June 1850, is a protected monument. The bridge is named after engineer Alois Negrelli, who oversaw its construction.
