Prague - The Prague City Hall has announced an open competition for the design of a logo and visual elements for the Karlín Viaduct project, where the capital city will open a municipal information center under the arches of the Prague Negrelli Viaduct at the corner of Sokolovská and Prvního pluku streets in March. The winner of the competition will receive a financial reward of 100,000 crowns. This was reported by the city spokesman Vít Hofman. Proposals can be submitted by interested parties by February 29.
The subject of the single-round open competition is the design of a logo and graphical solution for the presentation of the pilot arch, where for the first two years a municipal information center will operate in trial mode and it will also serve for various cultural events. If the operation proves successful, the city hall, according to earlier information, will glaze and remodel about forty more arches.
The capital city and Trade Centre Prague (TCP), which will operate the pilot arch, aim to ensure the creation of a unified visual style for the viaduct through the competition, which will serve for clear and understandable communication with the public and potential tenants of the viaduct spaces, Hofman stated.
"Graphic designers who want to contribute with their ideas and creativity to the future use of the public space in the center of Prague and give the project a new face can participate in the competition," said TCP marketing manager Martin Boška.
The winner of the competition will develop the final visual identity of the viaduct. The first three participants will be awarded, with the winner receiving a financial reward of 100,000 crowns and the proposals that come in second and third place receiving 15,000 crowns from the city. Details about the competition can be found on the website.
The Negrelli Viaduct is the first railway bridge in Prague over the Vltava River and the second oldest standing bridge in Prague. It connects Masaryk Station via Štvanice Island to Bubny. The structure, which is 1,100 meters long and was put into operation at the beginning of June 1850, is a protected monument. It is named after its builder Alois Negrelli. The viaduct was reconstructed from 2017 to 2020, with modernization costs nearing two billion crowns.
