Krnov (Bruntál Region) - People can visit Flemmich Villa in Krnov in the Bruntál Region starting today. The restored cultural monument, which previously housed an infant institute, is now used by the city museum. Visitors will now find an exhibition of tin, an exhibit on the history of the villa and the city, and an exhibition of paintings by Bohumila Sarnová-Horková and František Sarna.
The villa belongs to the city, which obtained it through a non-profit transfer from the Moravian-Silesian Region with the understanding that it would be used for non-commercial activities. The renovation lasted three quarters of a year. Krnov spokesperson Dita Círová stated that the reconstruction cost nine million crowns and was primarily funded by grants from European funds.
The Neoclassical villa was built in 1914 by textile industrialist Theodor Flemmich. "It was a time when local industrialists were wealthier, and their homes had to reflect that. When they were built, they focused not only on comfort and functionality but also on beauty. Flemmich invited Viennese architect Otto Prutschera to collaborate," said historian and curator of the Krnov museum collections Alexandr Michl-Bernard.
After nationalization in 1948, the city housed about eight families in the villa for several years. From 1951 until 2003, the building housed the infant institute. "It was a kind of blessing in disguise. Because not much was invested here in repairs, adjustments, and modernizations, many elements that would have most likely been destroyed have been preserved," said Michl-Bernard.
Among the preserved elements are a wooden-paneled entrance hall with a carved staircase, window stained-glass, built-in furniture, and a still-functional laundry dryer in the basement. The wooden outdoor jalousies have been restored, and the wooden floors on the ground floor were replaced according to the original appearance.
"The ground floor with the winter garden was used for representative purposes, including an entrance hall, a gentlemen's room, or a hunting room. Other spaces are cleverly connected to the hall," stated museum director Ivana Zajícová in a press release. The first floor was mainly used by the family as bedrooms. Operational rooms such as the kitchen and laundry were in the basement. Zajícová informed that the complex includes a garden, an entrance building previously used for agricultural purposes and as a garage, and a greenhouse with a remarkable structure and heating system.
Michl-Bernard mentioned that after the closure of the infant institute, when the villa was obtained by Krnov, exhibitions, smaller concerts, discussions, and lectures were held there. "Such activities can be expected here now after the reconstruction," said the historian. Except for Mondays, the villa will be open every day from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
