Mělník - Mělník has prepared the first proposal for the new appearance of Charles IV Square. Now representatives of the transport, environment, and city regeneration committees are commenting on it. Any modifications will be addressed by the city with the author of the proposal, after which it will be presented to council members and citizens, who will be able to provide their feedback. Mayor of Mělník Ctirad Mikeš (My City) said this at today’s press conference. Work is expected to begin in 2018.

By January next year, the town hall should know the first conclusions. "This is a key matter that will influence the functioning of the city for possibly several generations," said Mikeš. The investment will be at least in the tens of millions of crowns. The square is currently a disharmonious mix with problematic buildings from the communist era.

Part of the transformation of the square will also include the demolition of an unfinished building, which locals call Hold or Tehran, to be replaced by park areas and playground equipment, the exact form of which is not yet determined. "A large part of that area will be designated as a parking area," added Deputy Mayor Milan Schweigstill (TOP 09). The demolition will cost around 20 million crowns.

A new multifunctional library is also planned to be created in the former service building on the square, which will also serve as a community center. It will start operating at the earliest in three years. The town hall will first have the building insulated.
