The community festival EnviroCity aims to support life in Zvonařka around the Nusle Steps
From May 30 to June 8, 2017, the next edition of the multi-genre community festival EnviroCity will take place. Neighborhood meetings, picnics, performances, as well as presentations and debates with experts, city representatives, and local initiatives will occur right on the Nusle Steps. The main theme is the support of the local habitat and an effort to revitalize this unique urban space, which some people unfortunately sometimes confuse with a dump. The old garden of the wooden house Zvonařka, along with the adjacent Nusle Steps, forms one of Prague's biocenters and, together with the greenery along the railway corridor, parks, and gardens, connects to an important biocorridor in the city center.
The festival will kick off on May 30 at 7:00 PM with the presentation of the results of the community project COLridor, which aims for long-term support of the local habitat, for example, through the construction of insect hotels. It also involves a unique application of research in responsive wood. The program, which will take place over the next ten days, will feature artists who, with their site-specific performances, will connect to the theme of shaping and inhabiting a place in relation not only to humans but also to other living beings. Movement, music, or audio-visual performances by Jana Novorytová, Darina Alster, or Andrea Pekárková will complement a rich program of presentations in the field of environmental design or ecology. A notable Norwegian designer, Birger Sevaldson, a professor at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design and a member of the Ocean Design Research Association, will visit Prague, and attendees will have the opportunity to hear his presentation on how design contributes to building a democratic culture. Social geographer Michaela Pixová will speak on civic activism that shapes public space, and architect Marie Davidová will present findings from several years of research on renewable materials in her presentation Architecture as Part of the Ecosystem. On June 1 at 6:00 PM, representatives from the city, experts, and architects will come to debate the significance of biocorridors in Prague. Additionally, people will be able to participate in unique mapping of bats and birds, neighborhood meetings and brunches, or the production and sowing of seed balls with native flora. The festival will conclude on June 8 at 6:00 PM with a talk by Pastor Petr Tvrdka from the Old Catholic Church about the history of the site connected to the celebration of the feast of St. Medard at the local chapel of St. Family. However, the packed program of the EnviroCity festival does not end in June, as summer follow-ups are being prepared.
The festival is included in the list of events for the European Sustainable Development Week.
