Genoa - The Morandi highway bridge, a part of which collapsed two weeks ago in the Italian city of Genoa, resulting in the death of 43 people, is expected to begin demolition in about 30 days. This was announced today by the governor of the Liguria region, Giovanni Toti. The preliminary demolition plan, along with proposals for a new bridge, was presented to him today by the company Autostrade per l'Italia, which operated the structure. However, it is not yet clear who will build the new bridge.
Toti also announced today that the eastern part of the bridge should be destroyed more quickly, using explosives. The western part will be dismantled piece by piece using mechanical means, which will take about 20 days.
The Morandi bridge in Genoa was a busy route for both locals and foreigners, connecting the Italian interior with both the Italian and French Riviera. A portion of it collapsed in bad weather on August 14, dropping about thirty cars from a height of approximately 45 meters.
Responsibility for the bridge's collapse is under investigation. The Italian government has accused the operator of the highway, Autostrade per l'Italia, of insufficient investment in maintenance. The Ministry of Transport has proposed that the company pay for the new bridge but leave its construction to the government. The cabinet is considering awarding the construction to the state-controlled company Fincatieri.
The executive board of Autostrade per l'Italia has already allocated 500 million euros (12.9 billion CZK) for construction, compensation for the bereaved, and for those who lost their homes due to the collapse of the structure.
