Rome - The operator of the highway bridge in Genoa, which collapsed in mid-August killing 43 people, failed to ensure its safety. This conclusion was reached by the investigative committee of the Italian Ministry of Transport, which published the findings of its investigation today. The committee also stated that the company Autostrade per l'Italia did not take sufficient measures to prevent the bridge's collapse, despite the risk of collapse having existed in previous years. This was reported by the newspaper La Repubblica. The company rejected the committee's criticism.

"No safety measures were taken to protect users (of the bridge)," quoted the newspaper La Repubblica from the committee's report composed of architects and civil engineers. According to the report, the bridge operator failed to address the problems caused by the aging of its structure and "given the seriousness of the problem, took inappropriate and insufficient measures."

In response to the published report, the company Autostrade stated today that it has always acted in accordance with the law. It labeled the conclusions of the ministry's expert committee as "a hypothesis that needs to be verified," because the committee did not clarify the causes of the bridge's collapse.

The Morandi Bridge in Genoa, built in the mid-1960s, spanned a busy highway route and connected the Italian inland with both the Italian and French Riviera. A section of it collapsed on August 14, falling about 45 meters onto three dozen cars. 43 people died in the incident.

At the beginning of September, the Genoa prosecutor's office announced that it had begun investigating 20 people, including the management of the company Autostrade per l'Italia, on suspicion of manslaughter. The company's CEO Giovanni Castellucci faced criticism in August for refusing to apologize for the tragedy, stating that he would wait for investigators to determine who was responsible for the disaster.

The company Autostrade per l'Italia allocated 500 million euros (almost 13 billion CZK) for the construction of a new bridge and for compensation for the bereaved and people who lost their homes due to the collapse of the structure.
