Genoa - Video in which five hypotheses about how the so-called Morandi bridge in Genoa collapsed are demonstrated on a three-dimensional model was presented by the German studio Kostack. The animation was highlighted today by the newspaper La Repubblica. A part of the Genoa bridge collapsed on August 14, causing dozens of vehicles to fall from a height of about 45 meters. 43 people died in the tragedy.
The studio based its three-dimensional model on the original design of the structure, photographs of the collapsed bridge, and satellite images of clusters of debris. The animation gradually shows four versions of how the collapse of the structure could theoretically occur if one of the bundles of supporting cables were to break. The fifth variant presents the overload of the bridge.
Responsibility for the bridge's collapse is currently under investigation. However, the Italian government blames the operator of the roadway, the company Autostrade per l'Italia, for insufficient investment in maintenance. The Ministry of Transport has proposed that the company pay for the new bridge but leave its construction to the government. The cabinet is considering awarding the construction to the state-controlled company Fincatieri.
The rest of the bridge is expected to begin demolition by the end of September. The eastern part should be destroyed more quickly using explosives, while the western part will be dismantled mechanically piece by piece, which will take about 20 days, stated the governor of the Liguria region, Giovanni Toti.
The executive board of Autostrade per l'Italia has already allocated 500 million euros (12.9 billion CZK) for construction, compensation for survivors, and for those who lost their homes due to the collapse of the structure onto residential blocks.
Genoa-born, renowned architect Renzo Piano, who participated in the design of the Paris museum Centre Pompidou, has offered his assistance in building a new bridge in Genoa and has already submitted a proposal. In his sketches, the roadway rests on pillars shaped like a ship's bow. Another significant feature of Piano's design is 43 tall masts—one for each victim—whose nighttime illumination will resemble sails, wrote the newspaper Corriere della Sera.
