Genoa - The Italian prosecutor's office today authorized the release of video capturing the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, where 43 people died on August 14 last year. This was reported by the ANSA agency. The footage comes from the company Ferrometal, which was located near the bridge. The police confiscated the recording immediately after the accident at the request of the prosecutors. It had remained secret until now to rule out any influence on witness testimonies. The bridge's collapse lasted 14 seconds.
The prosecutor's office considers the video to be key evidence. It clearly shows, according to the public prosecutor's office, how one of the bundles of cables covered in concrete broke near the ninth pillar. Immediately after, pieces of the deck fall from both sides of the pillar, which collapses last.
At the beginning, the falling bridge pieces are noticeable, with vehicles having their lights on - some fall simultaneously with the deck, while two briefly lift into the air as they drive up the inclined structure at the last moment.
The former operator of the bridge, Autostrade per l'Italia, responded that according to their technical consultants, the video "does not clarify the cause of the collapse" and "does not show all the fundamental components of the bridge." The causes are still being investigated by the company's technical consultants.
The bridge partially collapsed on August 14 last year, resulting in 43 fatalities. Last Friday, the remaining two pillars of the structure were demolished.
Symbolically, last Tuesday, concrete work on the pillar of the new bridge began. Its construction is led by local native, architect Renzo Piano. According to the newspaper La Stampa, the new bridge is expected to resemble a ship. The steel structure will be illuminated at night by electricity from solar panels.
The area under the bridge will also change, with plans for the creation of a new district. The August collapse of the structure also damaged some existing buildings, into which their residents can no longer return. Approximately 600 people were left without a permanent roof over their heads.
In connection with the tragedy, the prosecutor's office is investigating 20 people and the former operator of the bridge, Autostrade per l'Italia.
