Only a few times a year, the gates of the Fine Arts School in Prague open to the public. The most anticipated and most visited event is typically ARTSEMESTR, a showcase of examination and semester works of UMPRUM students. This year it will take place from January 30 to February 3 and will showcase the work of more than 500 young authors from 24 studios. Artsemestr is not a curator-led exhibition. It is a presentation of what students tackled in their last semester and a testament to how their approach to creation evolves during their studies. Visitors can look forward to an inexhaustible variety of works from various artistic fields on a range of topics. “The assignments lead our students to a deeper study and understanding of various issues. They learn to collaborate and communicate with clients, companies, specialized workshops, and not least with colleagues from various fields with whom they cooperate. We specifically guide students to navigate the requirements that real practice entails. This approach also helps them establish important contacts and skills to lead a creative dialogue with the client,” says Rector Prof. Jindřich Vybíral regarding the collaboration that has become one of the school's priorities. Such projects were addressed by Studio of Architecture III, which dealt with Innovation Space – Brotfabrik Wien, the Furniture and Interior Design Studio designed restaurant spaces in OC Palladium, the Product Design Studio collaborated with Nachtmann glassworks, and the K.O.V. Studio participated in a competition to design an award for the Confederation of Industry and Transport. Among upcoming projects awaiting realization, we can mention a brick gazebo for the company Brispol and the entrance structure to the new vineyard of St. Michael in Kadaň on spoil heaps handled by the Studio of Architecture I. The collaboration between the Clothing and Footwear Design Studio and the Graphic Design and Visual Communication Studio, working with NOVIA FASHION on clothing collections made from graphically processed knitted fabrics, is also worth noting. The result of their months of work will be presented at the Milan Design Week and other exhibitions. The seminar Team Project, built on collaboration, also prepared a performance for the opening of Artsemestr in the school courtyard at two minutes to twelve. Students from all departments, including Theory and History of Art, participated in it. The theme is the politics of the climate crisis: the symbolic Doomsday Clock indicates how close the world is to global disaster, having been moved two minutes to midnight two years ago. Following the opening at UMPRUM, there will be an Artsemestr Afterparty at the FUTURUM club starting at 10 PM.
