Prague - The Art and Design School has officially changed its name to UMPRUM today. The original name was reportedly long and awkward, the new name refers to the pre-war tradition of the school. The academy also has a new visual style and website. According to Veronika Pařízková from the university, the changes will cost thousands of korunas.
"The abbreviation VŠUP does represent the individual words of the name, but it is unpleasantly sounding, awkward for foreigners, and in translation, VŠ means higher secondary school, which then gets translated to Academy and so on," said the rector of the school, Jindřich Smetana. "The return to the abbreviation UMPRUM is like a rhyme, it has a nice phonetic quality even for foreigners, graphically and dimensionally it's a pleasing letter abstraction," he added.
The new logo of the school from today consists of blue letters UMPRUM arranged in various shapes. The author is graphic designer Štěpán Malovec. The name change is also associated with new letterheads, stamps, and other documents. According to Pařízková, these changes will not be expensive as the school did not have many of these items.
The original name of the school at the time of its founding in 1885 was the C.k. Art and Design School. In the first half of the 20th century, it went through several names including UMPRUM, and after 1945, the name settled as VŠUP.
Part of the school's new "outfit" is the website. The new visual style will be presented starting today during the summer ArtSemester, where students showcase their work to the public.
