The exhibition of final and semester works by UMPRUM students of Artsemestr is for the first time taking place outside of the studio environment. All works will be displayed in one location, namely in the spaces of Hall 13 of the Prague Market.
“We decided to showcase our students' works outside of the historical UMPRUM building at Jan Palach Square due to the ongoing relocation of workshop facilities to the new technology building on Mikulandská Street. Combining the exhibition and the move was quite unimaginable, so we accepted the invitation from the City Hall of Prague and organized the exhibition at the Holešovice market,” says the rector of UMPRUM, Prof. Jindřich Vybíral, regarding the change of venue.
The change of environment offers a completely new perspective on the works of UMPRUM students. “We are preparing to exhibit a huge amount of works from various fields. How to install everything was inspired by the environment itself. The exhibition will resemble a large marketplace, and viewers will be able to 'get lost' among the many colorful exhibits just like in Holešovice. The architectural processing of the installation is handled by educators from Studio of Architecture III, Imrich Vaško and Shota Tsikoliya,” adds Vice-Rector Radek Sidun.
Thanks to the installation, interior and mental barriers between the studios will disappear. Everything will find itself in one exhibition landscape, on one exhibition platform, where various media and formats of artistic, design, and architectural disciplines will interchange.
Visitors can look forward to proposals for the revitalization of the Petřiny housing estate center, which Studio of Architecture I worked on for a competition organized by the Czech Chamber of Architects. Another project that may see realization is the interiors of new Gambrinus pubs, created by students from the Studio of Furniture and Interior Design in collaboration with Pilsner Urquell. The UNIQUE CLIENT collection by students from the Studio of Clothing and Footwear Design is certainly worth mentioning, as they focused on clothing designed for people who, for health reasons, cannot wear so-called ready-to-wear clothing. The Studio of Textile Creation, after last year's experiments with osier, focused on willow this semester. In addition to smaller objects, they prepared a large variable pavilion from this material that will be placed outdoors. The Studio of Film and Television Graphics concentrated over the past year on preparations for the celebration of its 70th anniversary. At the Artsemestr exhibition, it will present films based on the principles of animated documentary in the spaces of an improvised cinema on the 1st floor of Hall 13.
This year’s Artsemestr will showcase around 350 students and their semester and final works. However, the ARTSEMESTR summer 2021 exhibition does not end here. From mid-June until the end of June, Hall 13 will also feature the Diploma and Bachelor’s exhibition.
“In the next semester, we would like to return both exhibitions back to the UMPRUM premises. We are looking forward to them being displayed in the spaces of the new technology building,” presents the outlook for the future from the rector of the school.

Studios and themes
Studio of Architecture I - PETŘINY CENTER - The task was to design the center of the Petřiny housing estate with connections to the surroundings. The design includes a lively ground floor and a multifunctional hall, supplemented with apartments. The proposal draws on the tradition of multifunctional urban palaces. The functions in the ground floor were chosen by the students at their discretion to fulfill the main requirements of the entire housing estate - space for living, services, and culture. The outputs will also serve as preparation for the ČKA competition.
Studio of Architecture II - Contrast / Reuse - The inspiring point of this semester was a timber cottage – a skeleton. The generalization of the theme is contrast - reusing in architecture and urbanism of all scales, shifting into architectural detail. Final application in Prague.
Studio of Architecture III - Discreet emergence - Exploring emergent processes in nature and their application in architecture. // final project: 3 projects: 1) Environmentally focused urban interventions for Vienna; 2) Design of a building on Olbrachtova Street; 3) Public space in the age of CCTV
Studio of Architecture IV - Old Town Square - Students dealt with the completion of the square, volumetric composition, and a building program that should meet the needs of the city - metropolis, place, and time with a view to the future. The square's space is not clearly defined; the completion is missing along with the demolished Kren's house. In the last year, as the square empties due to pandemic measures, this absence is more than noticeable; 1st year - a standalone theme Concepts of Housing, addressing the current housing situation.
Studio of Industrial Design - 1st year: two "sculptures" expressing two contrasting emotions "passion X calm"; 2nd year theme "mechanism" - designing a new product where testing its mechanical function is dominant; 3rd year theme "budget" - design of a product of own choice, including creating a budget for its production; 5th year "chief designer" – collaboration with 2nd and 3rd years and leading their projects + theme autonomous transport // final project: 1st year “design Language”; 2nd-3rd year “Transhumanism design” - better than human; 5th year “rescue!”
Studio of Furniture and Interior Design – GAMBRINUS – Creating a contemporary pub environment with authentic expression and atmosphere. In collaboration with Pilsner Urquell, students jointly defined the modern pub as a traditional place for Central European gathering. Based on their analysis, they created forms of interiors in realizable forms // final project: BIBLIOBOX ART FOR MĚLNÍK - Bibliobox in Jan IV Square in Mělník. It continues collaboration with the city of Mělník and the book-sharing project.
Studio of Product Design – 1) UMPRUM Offices – space planning - project of reconstruction of the ground floor of the UMPRUM building, office layouts, selection of equipment, designs of atypical elements, shape, material and color solutions; 2) UMPRUM Chairs - dining chairs from any material, including the production of prototypes.
Studio of Sculpture - Wyprawa 2021 – due to distance learning and the inability to meet, students worked on preparations for a study trip. The trip is directed to Poland and called Wyprawa 2021. It is based on themes considering phenomena related to selected Polish realities, contemporary art, and (cultural) politics; ZIN of the Studio of Sculpture in collaboration with ArtMap and the Gallery of the City of Prague // final project: open theme
Studio of Painting – During the pandemic, without access to the school studio, when many painting students had limited opportunities for creation, we tried to maximize individual approaches and develop authorship within the formats set by the limits of the situation but according to the choices of the students themselves. The semester thus had no unifying theme, apart from weekly sharing of works and thorough collective reflection. As a final project, students present the results of their efforts throughout the semester, but in the form of 1 or 2 final works.
Studio of Intermedia Confrontation - The semester theme involved several assignments motivating collective work with voluntary participation. // final project: open theme - with possibilities of overlaps into the mentioned assignments.
Studio of Photography I - Diverse frames of perceiving time – Throughout the semester, joint discussions were held about various phenomena and approaches associated with the perception and reflection of time. // final project: open theme
Studio of Glass - Ritual - The phenomenon of ritual and its significance today. Students were tasked with creating two objects in which they will seek their own theme of ritual, design solutions, and free creation in the field of glass. 1) An object that can be grasped with one or both hands – emphasis will be placed on the connection with long-term personal and civilizational habits, customs, and rituals; 2) A free object, ideally also graspable in hands.
Studio of Ceramics and Porcelain - Journey to Prehistory or there and back again - During the semester, students focused on researching prehistoric ceramic techniques, and in the finals, they derive specific objects, installations, and videos from them.
Studio of K.O.V. - Doll House – A playhouse offering a certain variability and possibility of play. It is inspired by a selected building of a significant architect, chosen by the student. The variety of styles, structures, and materials used in the selected building leads students to individual solutions of the task and craftsmanship. // final project: Collection of jewelry or small objects, in relation to the chosen architect
Studio of Fashion Creation - Sustainable WAVE – Statement piece - The project builds on the post-master's project of doctoral student Linda Havrlíková, where she processes local unused raw material, sheep wool, into unique authorial clothing materials in the currently available conditions of the Czech textile industry. Students' task was to create an outerwear component from given materials, combining traditional craftsmanship, functionality, and aesthetic durability. Each student approached creation with the ambition to design and create clothing responsible to society and the environment. An important part of the process became working with cut and form with respect to minimal waste.
The result is a timeless garment that accounts for a sustainable lifestyle while confronting today’s consumer lifestyle, seasonal dictation, and overproduction in the textile industry.
Studio of Clothing and Footwear Design - Studio of Clothing and Footwear Design - UNIQUE CLIENT - The main theme of the semester focused on clients with a "non-standard" body type, which clothing production does not primarily have in its "sight." Students focused on the physicality of the human body, corporeality, but also on the psychology of working with a selected client for whom they designed a specific clothing collection. In addition to individual collections, there was also a joint studio task - creating a wardrobe for client Marek, who was also an inspiration for the assignment of this theme. The final collections were photographed in collaboration with Studio of Photography II.
Studio of Textile Creation - From Water to Shore - Revision of the process of weaving with three-stemmed willow, basket-making willow, and purple willow. // final project: Holešovická Stav(r)ba - Outdoor conceptual interactive installation using willow twigs.
Studio of Illustration and Graphics - 1) Playing cards — mariáš, French, tarot, and BANG; 2) Stolen Rain — illustrations of Amazonian tales in collaboration with the Department of Portuguese Studies at Charles University. // final project: Exploration — diptych or triptych printed in the most ecological way — rosography!
Studio of Lettering and Typography - Reading. Common theme – own content – optional medium – Students chose and processed their own specific issue from the overall theme of reading. The output consists of authorial projects that demonstrate, communicate, or otherwise respond to the chosen topic. // final project: Accompanying program - Short live performance (lecture, presentation, or another form of output), which will become part of the accompanying program of the Artsemestr 2021 exhibition. The performance is processed in the form of video.
Studio of Graphic Design and Visual Communication – Individuals for better functioning in the online world - Using a digital output (web application) to assist a selected company. // final project: Finalizing the web application in graphic design and presenting a functional prototype.
Studio of Film and Television Graphics – Anidok as a starting point – The result of a two-semester assignment where students created animated films based on the principles of animated documentary. The selection of themes was narrowed down to graduates, teachers, or various phenomena related to the Studio of Film and Television Graphics at UMPRUM, with which current students attempted to find identification. The theme of retrospection and accounting also relates to this year’s 70th anniversary of the studio, whose celebrations are planned for the fall.
Studio of Graphic Design and New Media - Routine versus Imagination – A series of 18 short-term tasks. These included extensive text corrections, designing a game in the Wikipedia environment, a memorial for covid victims, designing a studio newsletter, a series of documentary photographs, designing an invoice, video recording of physical performance, redesigning a timetable, lettering, and more. // final project: Related to the semester assignment Routine versus Imagination.
Studio of Photography II – 1) Documentation of technical workshops in the old UMPRUM building before reconstruction and moving to new premises on Mikulandská Street – capturing the genius loci, including research; 2) Documentation of the interior spaces of the metropolis (pieces of wilderness in the middle of the city) - "vague terrains," inner peripheries, or places between places that should play a more significant role in the city’s future. Places of parallel life in the metropolis, e.g., Žižkov Freight Station, Kolbenka, Vyšehrad Station… 3) Collaboration with the Studio of Clothing and Footwear Design on the semester task UNIQUE CLIENT – focusing on the physicality of the female and male body – their corporeality and on communication and psychology of working with clients. // final project: Documentation of the current state of Prager's cubes before their reconstruction, intended for archiving IPR, which is hosted in the buildings.

Studio with a visiting artist - Dialogues with various (including non-human) partners // final project: open theme
Department of Theory and History of Art - Project P – Collaborative project – an open platform based on the authored outputs of first-year students, thematizing certain concepts (slowness, care, participation, nature, movement, emptiness, periphery, transformation, memory, community, pandemic, etc.). The outputs will be diverse – of a collaborative nature, introspective character, utilizing documentary and performative practices. They will be supplemented by testimonies collected as part of the open call.
