Plzeň announces an urban architectural competition for the design solution of the former Světovar brewery site

The city of Plzeň announces, through the Department of Concept and Development of the City of Plzeň, a public one-round urban architectural competition for the preparation of an ideational proposal for the Světovar space – the area of the former brewery. “The aim of the competition is to obtain a high-quality proposal for the spatial and functional arrangement of the former brewery area,” explains Irena Vostracká, the director of the Department of Concept and Development of the City of Plzeň. “We require that the competition proposals take into account the city's demand for the location and operation of a design and lifestyle museum, a multi-genre cultural center, and a city archive,” adds Vostracká.

The competition is announced on May 24, 2010, in accordance with the competition rules of the Czech Chamber of Architects as a public anonymous ideational urban architectural one-round competition. “The deadline for submitting competition designs is set for the week from July 26 to 30, 2010,” adds the competition secretary from the Department of Concept and Development of the City of Plzeň, Eva Brejchová. Provision of Competition Conditions
The competition documents are prepared in digital form in the Czech language and will be provided through the competition secretary Ing. Brejchová (brejchova@plzen.eu). Competition conditions and documents can also be issued in printed form based on a written request to the competition secretary. Printed materials will be issued only in person at the Department of Concept and Development of the City of Plzeň, Škroupova 5, in office no. 56 by the competition secretary Ing. Brejchová by prior arrangement.

Area Addressed
The addressed area represents approximately 5 hectares in the Plzeň 2 – Slovany municipal district. The location is one of the prominent places in Plzeň located in the built-up part of the city. Originally, it was the area of the Světovar brewery. At the time of its establishment, i.e., in the 1920s, it was the eastern edge of the city; it currently lies in the middle of developed urban development. It forms a transition zone between the existing residential area of Slovany and the production and service area located south of the Světovar complex.
