PETR GIBAS, KAROLÍNA PAUKNEROVÁ:
Garden colonies from the perspective of social science Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at 7:00 PM at Divadlo 29 / Sv. Anežky České 29, Pardubice
The lecture series offcity architects (or rather non-architects) is an integral part of the long-term offcity project, which explores various perspectives on the city and seeks to communicate these insights to the public. In 2012, the common thread of all lectures will be the theme of urban peripheries.
Garden colonies, particularly those in Prague, currently represent a controversial element of urban space. Due to their location within the city, they often find themselves under significant pressure, which threatens to push them off the map. Petr Gibas and Karolína Pauknerová will present garden colonies as an extremely interesting social and material space and will show what makes these colonies appealing not only to social scientists but also to the wider public. They will briefly outline the history of the gardening movement, which dates back deep into the past, depict the current situation in Prague, compare it with abroad, present the main areas of interest of social science regarding garden colonies, and talk about how research is conducted in a garden colony.
Petr Gibas, MSc., studied geography at University College London and is currently a doctoral student at FHS UK, where he focuses on the aesthetics and aestheticization of industry. His main academic interest is the study of landscape with an emphasis on hybrid landscapes such as industrial landscapes in post-industrial Bohemia, landscapes of urban decay, or garden colonies in metropolitan environments. More generally, he is particularly interested in how the past becomes a part of the (image of the) landscape and how it is then represented (and aestheticized).
Karolína Pauknerová, PhD., studied anthropology at FHS UK and archaeology at FF UK and is currently in a post-doctoral research position at the Center for Theoretical Study in Prague. She works on the anthropology and archaeology of landscape and urban anthropology. In her post-doctoral project, she focuses particularly on how the past penetrates into contemporary urban and non-urban landscapes.
