One of the most respected German studios of our time and progressive Portuguese architecture. KRUH brings interesting personalities from the European architectural scene to Prague in October. At the first autumn lecture, which will take place on October 5 at the Světozor cinema in Prague as the final event of Architecture Day, the Brandlhuber+ studio and architect Thomas Burlon will present. Portuguese architecture will be represented by Spaceworkers®. They are coming to Prague from Munich, where they will receive an award for their work the night before the lecture.
They do not copy patterns, find a unique perspective, innovate... On October 5 in Prague, architects from Germany and Portugal will share their experiences and a different viewpoint on architecture. The lecture will feature Thomas Burlon from the German studio Brandlhuber+ Emde, Burlon, which is among the most progressive studios of the moment. Its founder, Arno Brandlhuber, will be teaching at ETH Zurich from this academic year – the most prestigious school for future architects. They attract attention with their unorthodox approach to architecture. They focus primarily on the renovation of old buildings, which they radically reconstruct. “One of the most famous projects is Antivilla near Berlin, which captures attention at first glance with its concrete façade and the concept of cut-out openings instead of classic windows. The building's layout can be adjusted from 60 to 230 m2 of living space as needed. Due to its unconventional appearance, the building has appeared in several advertisements and films,” presents the studio’s work Marcela Steinbachová, Architect of the Year 2016 and founder of KRUH.
The theme of Burlon’s lecture will be The Transformation of Heritage Conservation. Brandlhuber+ studio is well-known for its unconventional approach to the reconstruction and revitalization of old spaces. Their portfolio includes several extraordinary reconstructions of heritage-protected buildings. One of them is a brutalist church in Berlin, which was transformed into a gallery and community center.
The other speakers are Henrique Marques & Rui Dinis from the Portuguese studio Spaceworkers®. Portuguese architecture is currently among the most highly regarded. Spaceworkers® have received several significant awards, including the 2017 Construction of the Year award from the respected web portal Archdaily. They will come to Prague from Munich, where they will receive another award for their work the day before the lecture. At the lecture, they will talk about their work so far and the importance of connecting architecture and the landscape in which it is located.
After the lecture, the film Axolotl Overkill will be screened, which was largely filmed in Antivilla by the Brandlhuber+ studio.
The October lecture is part of the Different Perspective cycle. “The lectures present several innovative architects, distinctive, creative, and unique, who offer a different perspective on architecture, regardless of their country of origin. The cycle deals with various topics of architecture: urban planning, social housing, reflection in architecture, reconstructions, urbanism, and experimental architecture,” reveals Marcela Steinbachová. Finding a unique perspective that does not copy patterns is the curatorial mission of this association.
Admission to the lecture is 100 CZK and 80 CZK for seniors. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Světozor cinema. The lecture will be held in English without interpretation. More information can be found at www.kruh.info.
The lecture will conclude a week filled with architecture. On the weekend of September 30 and October 1, Architecture Day will take place. The festival will offer guided walks in interesting locations across the Czech Republic for free, this time on the topic of WATER, PEOPLE, CITIES. Simultaneously with the festival, from September 30 to October 4, there will be a Film and Architecture film festival – a film festival about architecture and urbanism. Audience members can explore architecture from the film screen in Prague, Brno, and selected regions.
As part of the autumn cycle, the following lectures will also take place, both freely accessible to the public:
