Kolín

Kolín - The city of Kolín has received a grant of ten million crowns from European funds for the reconstruction of the former water tower, which became a technical cultural monument in 2010. By the end of next year, the water tower should be opened to the public; there will be an observation tower at the top and a café at the bottom. Marek Semerád, Deputy Governor of the Central Bohemian Region, told ČTK today.
The city already renovated the Kolín water tower two years ago. The main goal was to prevent the condition of the building from deteriorating, and it was necessary to ensure the statics. Now the tower should be completely reconstructed, made accessible to the public for sightseeing and for sitting with refreshments on the terrace. It should be accessible to people with disabilities, thanks to a platform. According to the project, there will be an interactive screen on the ground floor that will provide views of the surroundings via cameras from the tower. There are plans for new benches, bike racks, and signage for cyclists around the water tower. Historical photographs of Kolín and works by students from local schools will be displayed in the tower's premises. "According to the rules of the Regional Operational Program, everything should be completed by the end of 2015," Semerád told ČTK.
The former water tower is one of the city's landmarks. It is currently empty and not being used. It was built in 1930 as a work of architects František Janda and Jan Hrášek. The original owner, a water management company, sold it to a private individual years ago, who then sold it to another interested party. In the meantime, the building fell into disrepair. Eventually, it was acquired by the city.
