Brno - The skyscraper of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Brno University of Technology (VUT) in the Pod Palackého vrchem area is in a state of emergency. According to estimates, its repairs will cost half a billion. Compared to the original plans, the costs will rise by about 200 million. Jitka Vanýsková, VUT spokesperson, told ČTK. During the reconstruction of the building, the classrooms of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering have been moved to other buildings in the campus where the school is located. The building, at 70 meters, is one of the tallest in the city, and the complete primacy was taken away from it only by the construction of high-rise buildings near the city center - the Spielberk Tower B and the AZ Tower skyscraper. The building of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has serious defects in its load-bearing structure. Builders had to stop their own work and conduct a detailed static survey. "The results of the static survey indicated that the load-bearing structure is at the brink of emergency condition, and project documentation has been prepared, including the restoration and strengthening of the load-bearing structure of the building along with all necessary related construction work," stated Vanýsková. Builders are currently conducting restoration work and installing steel elements that will subsequently supplement the existing load-bearing structure. This extends the duration of the construction work by several months. The building was supposed to be repaired by the end of next year. "We now plan to complete it by the summer of 2015," added Vanýsková.
