Brno - Once the tallest building in Brno from 1985, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Brno University of Technology (VUT) in Královo Pole, will receive a new façade. The contract amounting to nearly 180 million crowns also includes other renovations inside the 74-meter-high building. Preparatory work began in December, and full-scale work started today, said VUT spokesperson Jitka Vanýsková.

"Today, the fourth to seventh floors will start to be vacated, and by February 4, the first three floors will be cleared. The renovation is accompanied by significant challenges because it is taking place while the building is fully operational. Fortunately, VUT has a facility available on Údolní Street, which will serve as a temporary refuge for the faculty," explained Vanýsková.
During the repairs, the dean's office, the study department, and the cafeteria will be relocated. The operation of the Czech Savings Bank branch and the script shop will be ensured on the ground floor of the building. A new reception area will be created, and the entrance hall will undergo reconstruction.
Work on the high-rise building is expected to last three-quarters of a year. "There will be significant savings on heating, the unique one-pipe heating system will be replaced with a standard one. The summer operation will also be solved thanks to the new air conditioning system," informed Vanýsková. The building will have new low-voltage wiring and a new fire alarm system.
The faculty building began construction in 1975 and was completed ten years later. It was the tallest in Brno until last spring when Spielberk Tower B was completed, standing at 85 meters.
