Brno - Brno has a new parking garage in the city center. Built by the city company Brněnské komunikace for nearly 66 million crowns, the building on Kopečná street will offer motorists 88 parking spaces. There is a shortage of them in the city center. An hour of parking costs 30 crowns, which is comparable to parking in competing facilities. The parking garage will be operational from June 2nd.
The offer of parking spaces in the center has been expanding in recent months. Last December, a private investor opened a parking garage for 400 cars near Janáček Theatre. An hour of parking there also costs 30 crowns. The oldest parking garage in the city, Rozmarýn, currently offers hourly parking for 25 crowns.
The parking garage on Kopečná consists of three parking towers with separate entrances. Each tower has seven floors of parking spaces. People park their cars on the ground floor, insert their ticket into a machine, and the car departs to a free spot. Upon leaving, the situation is repeated, with the system bringing the car to them within four minutes.
The new building connects via a pedestrian bridge on the top floor to Husova street. It facilitates access for people to the city center and, for example, to the city hall building. The completion of the construction was delayed by half a year compared to the original plan.
Construction began in September 2012. The investor had to adjust the project. "It turned out that the rock massif covering the parking garage on one side has a different shape than the project anticipated. Thus, the foundation of the building had to adapt to this fact," said Petr Kratochvíl, the chairman of the board of Brněnské komunikace.
This year, construction of a parking garage on Panenská street may also begin. The city has already announced a competition for the contractor. "Competitions under the public procurement law are a balancing act at the edge and quite an uncertain process," said the mayor's deputy Robert Kotzian (ODS) today to ČTK. He recalled that the reconstruction of Milady Horáková street took the city almost two years to tender.
Preparations for another parking garage beneath Veselá and Besední streets are also ongoing. Directly above it, Janáček Cultural Center with a concert hall for the Brno Philharmonic may be built. However, the city currently does not have the funds for its construction. According to Kotzian, a private investor has expressed interest in the parking capacity in Besední street. "We are registering this interest, but for now, nothing is happening in this matter," Kotzian stated.
Both projects were originally overseen by the company Brno parking, which the city ultimately had to dispose of. The projects are now managed by Brněnské komunikace.
