Hradec Králové - The University of Hradec Králové (UHK) today ceremonially opened a new building for the Faculty of Science at a cost of 450 million crowns. The building is the third structure in the university campus Na Soutoku, opposite the Hradec hospital complex; the university aims to continue construction in this area.

The Faculty of Science at UHK, which has about seventy employees, is attended by 630 students. The new building, which offers 24 classrooms and 23 laboratories across four floors, already saw the relocation of the dean's office and the Department of Mathematics at the end of last year, with the remaining departments moving in at the beginning of this year.

"The main goal of the university was to create state-of-the-art scientific facilities for teaching and research. Students study in highly sought-after fields such as Systematic Biology and Ecology, Toxicology and Analysis of Harmful Substances, and Financial and Insurance Mathematics,"
said the rector of the University of Hradec Králové, Kamil Kuča.

The Dean of the Faculty of Science at UHK, Pavel Trojovský, told ČTK that before the completion of the new building, the faculty was based in three old buildings that did not provide ideal conditions for laboratories, for example. "We mainly needed to expand the research laboratories and improve spaces for students, which the new building has brought," said Trojovský.

The university campus Na Soutoku has housed the Pedagogical Faculty of UHK since 1997 and the completed Faculty of Informatics and Management UHK building in 2008. "In the near future, we want to continue construction in the area adjacent to the road ring, where our priority is to build sports facilities that will serve not only UHK but also other universities in the city and sports clubs," said the bursar of the Hradec university, Stanislav Klik. According to him, the university has commissioned the development of a study of the area, in which it wants to offer parking garages and other facilities instead of the existing parking model, serving, for example, applied cooperation between the university and the private sector.

Hradec Králové is also home to the Medical and Pharmaceutical Faculty of Charles University (UK), which opened its first building of the new campus next to the faculty hospital in 2015 at a cost of 315 million crowns. The Hradec faculties of UK plan to build additional structures for 2.5 billion crowns. "The main objective is to programmatically and spatially connect the two decentralized faculties of Charles University in Hradec Králové and create a unique center focused on biomedicine and pharmacy with a close connection to clinical activities related to the Hradec Králové University Hospital and the Faculty of Military Health Sciences of the University of Defense," stated the rector of UK, Tomáš Zima, in today’s edition of Lidové noviny, claiming that the project should be completed by the end of 2022.
