Hradec Králové - The University of Hradec Králové (UHK) will open a new building for the Faculty of Science in the autumn, built on the university campus opposite the Faculty Hospital. The school plans to enroll around 2600 students in nearly 150 fields, some of which will be available to study for the first time, said university spokeswoman Zuzana Boučková to ČTK. The total number of new students will be comparable to the previous academic year.
The construction of the new building, costing nearly 450 million crowns, began in 2015, and it will offer over 6000 square meters of classrooms, offices, and laboratories for science and research. The building's capacity will provide space for more than a thousand students and approximately 170 staff members. The Na Soutoku campus already has two buildings completed in 1997 and 2008, which serve the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Informatics and Management. The university plans to build a sports complex.
For example, the Institute of Social Work at UHK will newly offer full-time studies in the field of Social Work with Persons with Reduced Self-Sufficiency, and the Faculty of Science will also offer a new field. "Due to the high shortage of toxicologists in the labor market, this year we are introducing a new follow-up master's program in Bioorganic Chemistry and Toxicology of Pollutants, which is currently only the second in the country. The program is open to candidates from other universities," Boučková stated.
The Faculty of Education will for the first time offer a program focused on church music connected to teacher training. Another new program will be called Ethical Education. The Faculty of Informatics and Management wants to continue to expand study stays. "Compared to other faculties of this focus in the Czech Republic, the faculty ranks first in the number of incoming students from abroad and also leads in the length of their study stays," Boučková noted.
The Faculty of Philosophy will introduce a so-called practical module in currently sought-after disciplines, such as new media, in the new academic year. "An important piece of information for students is that the year 2017 will be especially associated with archaeological work at the planned section of the D11 highway from Hradec Králové to Jaroměř," Boučková added.
Hradec Králové is also home to the Charles University Medical Faculty, which, according to information on its website, will accept at least 35 applicants for the bachelor's degree program in Nursing, an additional 300 for the master's program in General Medicine, and 46 candidates for the field of Dentistry. The city also houses the Faculty of Military Health Sciences of the University of Defense, which will accept 36 applicants for the Military General Medicine program. It is also possible to study, for example, at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Charles University, and the Czech University of Life Sciences also has a consultation center in the city.
