Hradec Králové – Construction work on the fortified structures of the pre-war fortress Dobrošov in the Náchod area has been completed. The Hradec Králové Region invested more than 65 million crowns in the reconstruction of the fortifications and the establishment of a visitor center out of the planned 79 million crowns. This was stated by the region's spokesperson Dan Lechmann. The national cultural monument belongs to the Hradec Králové Region.
"Construction work on the fortified structures is finished," Lechmann said. The Jeřáb blockhouse underwent a complete reconstruction of its ceilings, while the Můstek blockhouse had surface treatments done, including concrete approaches. "The biggest transformation took place at the Zelený blockhouse, where replicas of firing slots were made, the entrance doors were modified, and a stair lift for wheelchair users was installed," Lechmann said.
Interior work and installation of audiovisual technology are currently underway at the newly built visitor center. "It could be completely finished by early 2022, and subsequently, the fortress could be reopened to the public,” Lechmann said.
The reconstruction started in June 2019. The total projected costs for construction and equipment are approximately 107 million crowns. Most of the costs will be covered by a grant from the Integrated Regional Operational Program (IROP).
The reconstruction of the fortified structures also included remediation work on the Zelený, Můstek, Jeřáb, and Polsko fortifications, including the underground sections.
The Hradec Králové Region has owned the fortress since 2015 when it was transferred free of charge from the Army of the Czech Republic. The operation of the fortress has been managed by the Náchod Museum for several decades.
Fortress Dobrošov, along with 12 other artillery fortresses, was designed to defend the state borders. Its construction began on September 13, 1937, and was planned to take two years. It was supposed to cost nearly 34 million Czechoslovak crowns. However, workers managed to complete only three of the seven planned structures. After the Munich events, construction stopped, and the fortress remained unfinished.
