The reconstruction of the historical building of the University of HK has so far cost 102 million

Hradec Králové - The reconstruction of the historically protected building of the Faculty of Education (PdF) University of Hradec Králové (UHK) in the center of Hradec Králové has so far cost 102 million crowns. The contracted price for the project is 339.4 million crowns, while savings have managed to reduce the current price of the work to 331 million crowns. Jakub Novák, spokesperson for UHK, said this to ČTK. The construction began in September 2023 and is expected to last two years. The prices are excluding tax.

The earthworks and demolition work are complete, along with the remediation of ground moisture, masonry and ceiling structures, and partially the floors. "Thus, we have completed the rough work. We have a complete roof on one half. And we have started the rough distribution of technical building equipment, which includes plumbing, air conditioning, electrical installations, and measurement, regulation, and central heating," Novák stated. After the rough installations, surface finishes and finalization of the distributions will continue, according to him.

The university has an agreement with the contractor that by April 30, 2025, the building must be ready for the installation of interior furnishings. "The interior furnishings are a separate delivery with preliminary costs of 20 million crowns excluding VAT," Novák said.

The completion of the construction part of the project is scheduled for June 9, 2025, and by June 30, the furnishings will be installed. "This is to ensure that users can move in during the summer months of 2025, and teaching for the winter semester of the academic year 2025/2026 can begin," Novák added.

The building being renovated is located at Liberty Square. Since 2015, it has had a new façade including insulation. The second of UHK's buildings at the square, which houses the Faculty of Arts, has also recently undergone reconstruction.

The PdF building was completed in 1897 and became one of the first Czech Art Nouveau buildings. Originally, it was a three-wing building with an open courtyard, and in 1923, a fourth wing was added, enclosing the building. The facility has one underground floor, three above-ground floors, and an attic. Originally, the premises served as a business academy.

The Faculty of Education in Hradec Králové, the oldest component of the University of Hradec Králové, was established in 1964 through the merger of pedagogical institutes in Hradec Králové and Pardubice. In 1992, the Pedagogical University was founded, and since 2000, the school has operated under the name Faculty of Education UHK.
