Biography
Otokar (Otakar) Bém was a Czech historicist and Art Nouveau architect. After completing his studies at the Higher Technical School in Liberec from 1894 to 1896, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under architect Karl von Hasenauer and in the architectural specialty of Prof. Otto Wagner. From 1898, he worked in Moravian Ostrava, initially as a site manager for builder František Jureček, whose daughter he married in 1900. In the early stages, he used vegetal Art Nouveau decorations, often in combination with historicist compositions and details. During the first decade of the 20th century, he applied the forms of geometric Art Nouveau. In collaboration with Hubert Gessner, they developed the project for a school in Mnichovo Hradiště, a savings bank in Poděbrady, and between 1896 and 1897, the project for a higher commercial school in Hradec Králové and the J. Horák house in Valašské Klobouky. In Ostrava, it is primarily the buildings of city houses in the styles of Neo-Baroque, Neo-Renaissance, and Art Nouveau that feature vegetal Art Nouveau decoration.
