Karlovy Vary - The Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) and Minister of Finance Alena Schillerová (for ANO) will today present plans for the reconstruction of the hotel and the hotel pool center at the Thermal in Karlovy Vary. The hotel, which belongs to the state, needs reconstruction, but descendants of the building's authors are concerned about its appearance.
The hotel was built according to the design of architects Machonin in the 1970s in the style of the then-modern brutalism. The Machonins designed not only the building but also the interiors. The outdoor pool with thermal spring water and a view of the city became iconic.
The pool has been out of operation since 2015. Initially, the state tried to offer it for sale, but quickly withdrew the offer. Since last year, it has been looking for a tenant. The tenant should be Saunia s.r.o. However, the state will first repair the pool center at its own expense.
Hotel Thermal posted a loss of 9.7 million crowns last year, partly due to a drop in revenue caused by a fire at the wellness center in 2017. Lower revenues were also due to a decrease in affluent guests from Russia.
