Kladno - The repair of the Sítenský Bridge will begin in Kladno no earlier than October 2026, and it will be completely closed. In April this year, full-scale work on the design will begin. The city is using the Design and Build method for the first time, where the same company will provide both the design and construction. This will save costs and ensure that the company does not question the execution of the project during the work, said Kladno's Deputy Mayor Přemysl Mužík (Choice for Kladno) today.
Work on the bridge cannot be done without a complete closure; any other approach would significantly prolong the work, according to the deputy mayor. The builders will completely replace the deck, strengthen the pillars, and also build barriers that will prevent a potential suicide from jumping off the bridge. Work on the bridge will last approximately one year.
Last year, Kladno selected a company in a tender that will simultaneously prepare the design and carry out the repairs. The total costs will be 147 million crowns excluding VAT; according to original estimates, the anticipated cost of the reconstruction could reach up to 300 million crowns.
The bridge connects the center of Kladno with the Sítná housing estate and part of Kročehlavy. Drivers will be able to detour the closed section, for example, via Železničářů street, but there will be more options for detour routes. The bridge will retain four lanes of traffic, two in each direction, even after the reconstruction.
In the past, the former leadership of Kladno planned the construction of a new bridge based on the design by architect Josef Pleskot, which would have been a unique structure without pillars. At the time, it was estimated to cost around 350 million crowns. Mayor Milan Volf (Choice for Kladno) described the proposal as aesthetically interesting, but according to him, the current leadership of the city aims to ensure the operation of the bridge efficiently and economically. According to a comprehensive assessment of the technical condition of the bridge, including a construction-technical survey, the leadership of Kladno decided that the bridge can be repaired and does not need to be completely demolished.
The Sítenský Bridge measures nearly 144 meters and was approved in 1966. Its lifespan after repairs is expected to be another 80 years.
