Prague – The reconstruction of the Barrandov bridge in Prague will begin on Monday, May 16. Two days earlier, road workers will start marking detours and traffic restrictions. The first phase of the work on this key transportation project in Prague will last 110 days, carried out for the city by the company Porr for 594.5 million CZK. Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Prague Sobě) said this in response to a query from ČTK today. The total reconstruction of the bridge will take several years.

The repair of the southern carriageway will begin in mid-May, and at the same time, the ramp from Strakonická will be replaced. Drivers will have to follow detour routes, and traffic will also be partially restricted on the bridge.

The bridge is part of the city ring road and is crossed by about 140,000 cars daily. Therefore, the work is spread over several years, and traffic restrictions will only be in place for part of each year. The first part of the bridge was opened in 1983, and the bridge has not been completely repaired since. Last year, the lower part, including the pillars, was repaired without requiring any restrictions on the bridge.

"On the night of Saturday, May 14, detour routes and restrictions on the bridge will begin to be marked. This should take about two days, and the actual work will commence on Monday, May 16. We managed to significantly shorten the original duration of this year’s repairs," said Scheinherr. Originally, according to him, this year’s work was planned for 180 days.

Before the repairs begin, the work on the expansion of Strakonická and the access ramp from the bridge to Modřanská will be completed, the reconstruction of Modřanská Street will also be finished, and the ramp at the Lihovar will be constructed, which drivers will use when traveling from Strakonická to the Barrandov Bridge. The bridge of Závodu míru in Zbraslav has already been expanded. "In the last two years, all detour routes have also been repaired," added Scheinherr.

Drivers traveling from Strakonická to the eastern edge of Prague, for example, should use the outer ring road. The ramp at the Lihovar will serve mainly for drivers heading to Krč and its immediate surroundings. In connection with the turning at Lihovar, the number of lanes on Strakonická in the direction from the city center will be reduced from two to one.

A temporary exit from the Prague ring road to Libušská Street, which has been closed since the formation of the ring road, will be opened. This is intended to relieve Modřanská. However, the exit will only be open during the repairs, after which it will be closed again. On the Barrandov Bridge itself, traffic will be closed one lane at a time from the current four lanes in each direction.

Changes will also affect public transport. According to earlier statements from the Technical Road Administration (TSK), tram lines 2 and 21 will be reinforced, and the capacity for trams will be increased at Zlíchov and Palackého Bridge. Bus lines 125, 170, or 196 will be adjusted. Preference for public transport will be improved on Československého exilu, Vrbova, Jeremenková, and Ke Krči streets.
