Prague - The repair of the Prague Barrandov Bridge will cost 600 million crowns. Adam Scheinherr (Prague Together), the Deputy Mayor, said this at today’s meeting of the municipal transport committee. The first phase of the repairs is expected to last from June this year until November 2021 and will cost 70 million. The complete repair is scheduled to finish in 2025. The bridge is in poor condition, with water leaking into its structure, and both the surface and the structure need to be repaired. It was built from 1978 to 1988, is part of the Prague Ring Road, and is crossed by 144,000 cars daily.

"There will be no complete suspension of traffic, but always a restriction of one lane, which happens during regular maintenance or guardrail repairs. It should not have any serious impacts," Scheinherr said.

The Technical Administration of Communications (TSK) will first repair the lower part of the bridge, focusing on the piers in Modřanská Street and in the river. The work here will take place with a winter break from June this year to November next year. This year's work will not affect traffic, which will continue without restrictions. In 2021, the remaining piers will be repaired and traffic will be partially restricted on Modřanská Street. Construction materials will be transported by the Vltava River from Modřany.

In the second phase of repairs, a complete reconstruction of the load-bearing structure and the Barrandov and Modřany exit ramps will take place. These works will cost 530 million crowns. During reconstruction, there will always be two lanes open in each direction. The work will be divided into two parts, with one ramp closed during each part.

It will be necessary to replace the bridge deck, create new insulation, and replace drainage and the surfaces of roadways and sidewalks. Public lighting will be repaired, and it will be necessary to relocate engineering networks. TSK will also repair the shell of the bridge and its piers.

The Barrandov Bridge connects Prague 4 and 5. It measures over 340 meters and has eight lanes and two sidewalks.

Prague has long-term problems with the condition of its bridges. At the beginning of December 2017, a pedestrian bridge collapsed between Císařský Island and Troja, injuring four people. Several bridges over the Vltava, including the Libeň and Hlávka bridges, the Legions Bridge, and the Palacký Bridge, are also in poor condition. The city, through TSK, has initiated diagnostics of their condition, as well as that of the cable bridge on the Southern Connector.
