Prostějov - The Prostějov town hall is likely to demolish the buildings in the area of the former cavalry barracks, which have been sitting empty for a long time and attract homeless people. The city has not yet found a new use for the abandoned barracks, and no proposals have been submitted so far by entrepreneurs to whom the town hall offered the properties. Deputy Mayor Zdeněk Fišer (ČSSD) told reporters today that the town hall will wait until the end of March to make a decision about the demolition when the deadline for submitting potential offers for the use of the barracks expires. "If no one applies, a discussion about possible demolition will follow," he stated. However, Fišer is skeptical that a meaningful use for the buildings in the old barracks area will be found. According to him, the town hall has considered about six projects in the past, but none have been realized due to high costs. A few years ago, there was a proposal to build a residential home with care services, which was estimated to cost 159 million crowns. "Even though there was an opportunity to receive a generous subsidy back then, investors ultimately withdrew from the plan," Fišer noted. According to the deputy, it will likely be best to demolish the buildings. The city could then potentially receive a subsidy for the regeneration of this area. The land is owned by the city, and according to the zoning plan, civic amenities can be built there. The town hall previously considered building a new multifunctional center on the site of the cavalry barracks, which would replace the old community center, about the demolition of which no decision has yet been made. The town hall has already announced a tender for the demolition of the barracks buildings, which was won by the company DEKONTA - AQUASYS - demolition. The demolition of the barracks is expected to cost around 4.4 million crowns, which is nine million crowns less than originally anticipated by the town hall. The cavalry barracks were built in Prostějov at the end of the 19th century. Initially, they housed a cavalry regiment, which was later replaced by a radar unit. In the 1990s, the army abandoned the barracks, and they have been deteriorating ever since. The barracks complex included 13 buildings. The complex features a cafeteria, a storage facility, and a vehicle fleet.
