Prostějov – The Prostějov city hall is preparing an architectural competition for the redesign of the former cavalry barracks area, whose dilapidated buildings were demolished more than six years ago despite protests from some residents and opposition. A park is set to be created in the vacated space. The city council has already approved the organization of the architectural competition, which is expected to be announced by the end of November. The city hall wants to know the results of the competition by March next year. Jiří Rozehnal, the mayor's deputy, informed ČTK.
"The aim of the competition is to create a park or park-like areas that will primarily serve the residents of nearby existing and newly designed homes. The winning proposal will then be developed into further stages of project documentation for the central area," Rozehnal stated. The city will spend approximately half a million crowns on the architectural competition, and Rozehnal estimated the costs for the project documentation at 2.5 million crowns. The construction of the park is not expected to exceed 30 million crowns.
The cavalry barracks were built in Prostějov at the end of the 19th century. They were initially home to a cavalry regiment, which was replaced by a radar unit. In the 1990s, the army abandoned the buildings. The city took over the area in 2004 and found no new purpose for it. The abandoned buildings gradually deteriorated and attracted homeless individuals.
For this reason, the city hall decided to demolish the extensive area of the cavalry barracks. The buildings were demolished in 2016. The opposition disagreed at the time, arguing that the area could have been repaired and used meaningfully. A petition to preserve the historical building of the cavalry barracks was signed by over a thousand people.
