Nové Město na Moravě - The town hall in Nové Město na Moravě is preparing to build a sports hall. In addition to the area for ball sports, it will feature a large climbing wall. The costs for constructing the hall, which will replace the aging sports center, are expected to be around 60 million crowns. The town council approved the initiation of the contractor selection process last week. A contractor could be selected by the end of March. Mayor Michal Šmarda (ČSSD) told ČTK.

"We have been planning the hall in Nové Město na Moravě for 50 years," he stated. Work will begin with the demolition of the sports center on Tyršova Street. The new hall will be built in its place during the year 2019. Next year, the city intends to apply for a grant for it. If unsuccessful, according to the mayor, it can secure funding from its own resources.

"It is a sports hall for all ball sports, approximately the size of three standard gymnasiums,"
Šmarda explained. The climbing wall in the hall will have specifications that allow for national climbing competitions. It will be 12 meters high and 20 meters wide. The addition of the wall to the project was advocated by climbers, and later supported by a larger portion of the voting residents in a survey organized by the city two years ago.

Local athletes will have to make do without the sports center until the hall is completed. "Schools must also adapt in physical education, for example by adding swimming classes," said the mayor. The municipal baths with swimming pools, saunas, relaxation baths, and a fitness center in Nové Město na Moravě have been operating since November 2015. The construction of these facilities cost the town hall 99 million crowns.
