Brno – A new municipal hospital in Brno could be established by 2027, offering 550 beds. The price has not yet been precisely determined but will be in the billions of crowns. Pavel Piler, the director of the Trauma Hospital and the Hospital of the Merciful Brothers in Brno, which should fall under the new hospital, said this to ČTK today. Both hospitals currently have 450 beds, so their number will increase.

The city currently operates both the Trauma Hospital and the Hospital of the Merciful Brothers, which are located a few kilometers apart. The new hospital was originally planned for Kraví hora, but due to a wave of opposition from citizens and the observatory located at Kraví hora, the city backed down and is now considering locations in Komárov or in the Technology Park. According to Brno, unlike the existing two facilities, the new structure would allow for the concentration of all operations in one place, thus increasing the efficiency of health services. The project would also offer 100 new beds, considering that capacities are no longer sufficient.

The exact cost of construction is still unknown. "An architectural study has not yet been completed, and moreover, price movements in construction are extremely dynamic and volatile. What is certain, however, is that it will be in the billions of crowns. The earlier construction begins, the cheaper this project will be. The estimated implementation time is six to ten years," Piler stated. According to him, the new building should bring annual operational savings in the tens of millions of crowns.

Funding for the construction could involve several entities, including the city, the region, both hospitals, as well as the state through various ministries, health insurance companies, and also private sources.

The hospital is expected to have several above-ground and one underground floor. The underground will house technical and personnel operations, while above it will be the emergency department, pharmacy, restaurant, as well as the management, administration, and laboratories. The upper floors will include emergency medicine operations such as operating rooms and inpatient units, as well as a maternity ward, where, according to Piler, there should be a capacity of about 2,000 births annually. The roof will feature a helipad.
