Brno - In the place of the halls and buildings of the failed Vlněna Brno near the city center, apartments and offices will be built within three years. The investor will largely demolish the buildings next to the Vaňkovka shopping center, leaving only two main structures, as ČTK learned today from the construction documentation. The area, which was previously industrial and has seen little use and decline recently, is gradually changing its appearance; it is expected to become a new urban boulevard. Near Vlněna, which ceased production in the mid-90s, another company is now stopping works on the land of the former Metropol hotel. According to plans, the new multifunctional building is expected to have 130 apartments, 2000 square meters of office space, and around 3000 square meters for shops and restaurants. The new Vlněna is expected to have a similar focus, but unlike Metropol, it will be an entire complex with several high-rise buildings. Currently, about a third of the entire four-hectare area is used, which includes, for example, a furniture store, a fitness center, and a car service. After a two-year transformation, which should begin at the end of 2008, over 500 apartments and nearly 13,000 square meters of commercial space will be created in both the new and existing buildings, along with a hotel with 324 beds. At the same time, the new Vlněna should be the beginning of the planned urban boulevard that will extend further from the center. The entire area south of the core of Brno is gradually changing. A few years ago, the Vaňkovka shopping gallery was built on the site of an abandoned factory, next to it a hotel and offices are currently under construction, and there are plans for further billion-crown investments, including a new train station.
