Brno - Two fountains and 12 trees will be installed at Dominikánské náměstí in Brno, which the city is reconstructing for approximately 60 million crowns. This was stated by Brno Mayor Petr Vokřál (ANO) and his deputy Martin Ander (SZ) to journalists. The design of the greenery was agreed upon by architects and preservationists with regard to archaeological finds. The reconstruction began in April and is expected to be completed later this year. The parking lot has been removed from the square, transforming it into a relaxation zone.

In the middle of the square, there should be a copy of the Mercury Fountain, while another fountain will be placed at the entrance of the square near St. Michael's Church. "We will conduct a competition for this water feature. If there is resistance to the design of the second feature, we will also hold a competition, but we prefer a copy of the Mercury Fountain," Vokřál stated.

The fountain in the middle will be surrounded by four large plane trees. It will complement a new alley that will be created in the lower part of the square, extending along Veselé Street. The final design of the space was influenced by unique archaeological finds in the northern third of the square, which led preservationists to disallow the planned planting of trees in that area. "I am glad that a balance was found between the requirements of the preservationists and architects, as well as between the needs of residents, who miss greenery in the center," Vokřál said.

According to him, the former parking lot in the center will be replaced by a peaceful corner for rest and relaxation, with newly planted trees and the fountain providing relief from the heat of the streets. "It is hard to imagine a pleasant atmosphere in the square without trees. Especially on hot summer days, shade is a necessity. In total, there will be 12 trees in the square," Ander added.

To create good conditions for tree growth, modern technology called root cells will be used, which define sufficient space for the root systems of the trees beneath the square's surface while also protecting underground utilities. The trees will be positioned to allow for the placement of a stage in the lower part of the square during cultural and social events.
