Brno – Brno has approved the announcement of a new competition for the design of a water feature in Dominikánské náměstí. Its price must not exceed 7.55 million crowns excluding VAT, stated Zuzana Gregorová from the press department of the city hall in a press release. The city had previously announced a competition, but the council did not select any of the proposals.
In 2018, Brno renovated the square for more than 70 million crowns. Parking spaces were removed, while trees were added. At the turn of 2019 and 2020, an architectural and artistic competition was held to supplement the square with two water features, but none of the proposals succeeded. Therefore, the council approved the announcement of a new competition. "The subject of the competition is the author's design for one water feature in the central part of Dominikánské náměstí. The design must respect the significance of the site as a gathering and social space in front of the local government headquarters," said Deputy Mayor Tomáš Koláčný (Pirate). According to him, the requirements for the feature include enhancing the character of the place, cooling the surroundings, the air, and the paved surface of the square during the summer months, including creating a mist effect. "It may or may not reflect the historical original fish market that was located here. The new water feature must definitely be a work of art that is expected to achieve a high artistic level," Koláčný said.
Initially, two features were planned, one in front of St. Michael's Church and the other in the central part of Dominikánské náměstí. However, the expert part of the evaluation committee from the previous competition ultimately agreed that there was not enough space for the feature in front of the church. The council then did not select any of the proposals and instructed the culture department to revise the assignment and announce a new competition.
