Brno - The statue of Emperor Joseph II on the reconstructed Dominican Square in the center of Brno will not be built. This was decided by a public vote, as stated in a press release by the city magistrate spokesman Filip Poňuchálek. Out of 1170 valid votes, 625 people voted against the statue, while 545 were in favor. The city leadership will decide what will ultimately be placed in the square. Currently, the statue, which was created in the late 19th century, is located in the grounds of the Černovice Psychiatric Hospital.

The survey for the most suitable solution for the square was initiated during the summer by the city of Brno, the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno, and the Brno-Center district, which also initiated the idea of placing the statue of Emperor Joseph II in the square. A nine-meter model placed in front of the New Town Hall on Dominican Square may have helped people in their decision-making.

“A total of 1170 valid votes were cast in the survey. 545 were in favor of the placement, of which 63 voted in person at the tourist information center of the city of Brno on Panenská Street, and 482 used the online form,”
Poňuchálek stated. Of the 625 people who were against placing the statue in the square, 532 voted online and 93 in person at the information center.

The reconstruction of Dominican Square, costing around 60 million, began in April and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The parking lot will be removed from the square, and it will become a public space. The investment also includes work on engineering networks.
