final_final: Under the auspices - intervention at Dominican Square

We are already waiting for the results of the architectural-art competition for the design of a water feature in Dominikánské náměstí for the third time. The first of these competitions took place fifteen years ago, and the second occurred last year. Both, however, ended in failure after the city leadership of Brno – despite the recommendations of the expert jury – rejected the realization of the winning design simply because it did not appeal to a part of the political representation. In recent years, the city hall has also come up with its own – more or less bizarre – attempts to incorporate an artistic element into the square: whether by relocating another fountain or by installing (an already existing) sculptural work in the addressed location.
“With the installation that has been on display in Dominikánské náměstí since yesterday, we are responding not only to the local issue of the fountain but also to the dismal state of architectural competitions in Brno in general,” agree Helešic and Valíček. The temporary installation titled “Under the Patronage” addresses both the misuse of the competition institution and the thwarted work of the winning author collective and all other participants.
The intervention was created in collaboration with the Gallery of Architecture Brno and the Faculty of Architecture at VUT in Brno.
The project is realized with the financial support of the City of Brno, the Ministry of Culture, the Czech Architecture Foundation, and the Faculty of Architecture at VUT in Brno.
final_final is a collective dealing with installations and events based on the local (versus global) context of contemporary architecture, urbanism, and society. They all graduated from the Faculty of Architecture in Brno.
