Prague - The planned painting of street artists on the pillars of Prague's Nusle Bridge has been postponed for now. The organizers of the event told ČTK today that six Czech and two foreign artists were supposed to artistically approach part of the structure. However, the event, which was supposed to start on Friday, is facing protests from preservationists and the last living author of the bridge's design, Stanislav Hubička. However, the organizers do not want to give up their long-planned event and want to discuss with the architect how to paint on the bridge without causing damage. A petition has also been created against the event supported by the city, signed by several hundred people. Additionally, the event is set to take place in an area that belongs to the city's heritage zone, where permission is required. However, according to the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ), permission from Prague's preservationists has not yet been granted. According to the NPÚ, it would be an invasive intervention into Prague's heritage zone as well as the structure itself. "Paint may penetrate the surface of the concrete, and its subsequent removal may be unfeasible or only possible at the cost of damaging the surface of the pillars, high costs, or potential environmental impact," said NPÚ spokesperson Zdeňka Kalová to ČTK on Wednesday. Architect Hubička sent a letter to the organizers and the city, in which he disagrees with the planned artistic treatment of the pillars. He suggests that the artworks be created in the form of temporary and removable decorations, for example on banners that would be hung and stretched on the bridge's structure. However, the organizers believe they can reach an agreement with the architect. The bridge is expected to be restored to its original state during its planned reconstruction. The graffiti artists are coming to Prague at the invitation of the company Taktum, which is organizing the event called Nuselák aka Graffiti bridge. At the beginning of October, it will be followed by an international exhibition of graffiti and street art called Obsessed with the City at the Municipal Library, which will also feature artists from the Nusle Bridge.
