Prague - The Prague City Hall received an original documentation of the Industrial Palace as a gift, whose left wing was completely destroyed by fire in October. The mayor Pavel Bém (ODS) presented it to journalists today. He added that the materials from 1891 were donated to the city by a private donor who prefers to remain unnamed.
"It's a small miracle," said Bém. The mayor received the materials on Sunday and presented them to Prague city council today. According to the mayor, new documentation will be developed based on the plans, according to which the Industrial Palace can be rebuilt. However, it will have to meet current fire protection standards. Therefore, it is possible that the new wing will not be an exact copy of the original.
According to Bém, the state is the owner of the documentation, and the metropolis will now have to solve how to acquire the materials for the ownership of Prague. In time, it could become part of the collections of the Museum of the Capital City of Prague and could also be displayed. "The plans are extraordinarily charming; it is a beautiful piece of archival material," added Bém.
Materials were previously sought by Prague at the National Technical Museum, but they were not there. The City Hall contemplated tracing the plans from historical magazines from 1890, where they are captured.
The City Hall wants the palace to be completed by the end of September 2010 by the company Incheba, which operates the Holesovice exhibition grounds. For this reason, the city wants to sign an addendum to the lease agreement with Incheba no later than the first days of December, in which the company would guarantee that it would restore the palace from insurance and cover any remaining costs from its own funds. "They probably don't want to do it very much, but I believe they will sign," said councilor Milan Richter to ČTK today. If Incheba does not agree to the addendum, the city intends to terminate the contract with them.
The fire at the Exhibition Grounds in Holešovice was most likely caused by a technical defect, according to the police. The fire originated in one of the exhibition stalls that was part of the dental technology fair Pragodent. Flammable sprays intended for cleaning dental office equipment were reportedly in the stall, which exploded in the fire. The left wing of the historic building burned down, leaving only part of the peripheral walls.
According to initial estimates, the fire destroyed property worth up to one billion crowns. Incheba stated that the entire area of the Exhibition Grounds was insured for 2.5 billion crowns.
