Brno - The long-term care hospital (LDN) will transfer from Červený kopec in Brno to the Hospital of the Merciful Brothers on Polná Street within two years at the latest. The hospital is undergoing renovations in several phases, which will allow for the transfer of 73 beds, said director Josef Drbal today to ČTK.
Currently, builders are repairing the facilities for the endoscopy center and a part of the surgical inpatient unit. Next year, a new LDN unit will be created on the ground floor of the building, and the existing one will be modified.
According to Drbal, the complex of low buildings of the treatment center on Červený kopec is in poor technical condition. It is located about 1.5 kilometers from the hospital and the necessity for supply and food delivery is also inadequate. "Currently, it is a detached workplace. Having LDN directly in the hospital will be more advantageous. There is better infrastructure and continuity with acute care," said Drbal. Part of the LDN is already functioning in the hospital, with about 170 beds there. There are another 73 at Červený kopec.
The buildings on Červený kopec are owned by the city. After they are vacated, the city hall will have to consider what to do with the area further. "At the moment, we do not have clear plans for what to do with the area; we will wait for the relocation of LDN. The buildings could then potentially be used for a new project in the area of social care or for private purposes," said the mayor's deputy Oliver Pospíšil (ČSSD) to ČTK.
Preparations for the transfer of LDN to the Hospital of the Merciful Brothers have been ongoing for some time. Last year, for example, a central space with outpatient clinics was built. The current phase of repairs for the facilities for endoscopy and a part of the surgical inpatient unit will cost approximately 20 million crowns. For another 20 million, the hospital plans to build new beds on the ground floor of the existing LDN on Polná Street in the hospital complex next year. According to Drbal, this phase will be supported by the EU.
The Hospital of the Merciful Brothers is also facing problems this year due to the reimbursement decree. "We are trying to avoid ending up in the red, and it looks like the management will be balanced this year. At the same time, I am also appealing for the system to be set up more fairly and to avoid such disparities between individual facilities," said director Drbal.
The Hospital of the Merciful Brothers is the oldest consistently functioning city hospital in Moravia. It was founded in 1747 by Moravian Count Jan Křtitel Leopold of Dietrichstein and is celebrating 266 years since its establishment this year. The hospital now has over 500 beds and nearly 600 employees. Including outpatient examinations, the hospital serves around 140,000 patients annually. The facility is run by the city of Brno.
