Prague – On Rohanský Island in Prague 8, 1,750 new apartments will be built for 3,800 people, creating job opportunities for 5,500 people. This was stated by the director of the Institute of Planning and Development of the City of Prague (IPR) Ondřej Boháč during a meeting with journalists at the opening of an exhibition about this area. According to him, construction is set to begin in 2020, with the main phase taking place between 2030 and 2040. A new pedestrian bridge to Holešovice and a park covering over 100,000 square meters will also be created here.
"The area of Rohanský Island is 44 hectares, which is the size of ten Wenceslas Squares. More than half of this area will see new construction. The height and volume of the new buildings will connect with the current development in Karlín and its surroundings. The transformation will occur gradually in several phases. The first will start next year, with the construction of a new park and the main residential development taking place between 2030 and 2040," Boháč stated.
Rohanský Island is located on the right bank of the Vltava River, neighboring Karlín and Libeň. On the western side, it is separated by the Negrelli Viaduct, and the Libeň Bridge is to the northeast. According to Boháč, residential construction is planned on the river side, while offices and shops will be located along Rohanské nábřeží street.
"The recreational area will expand from the current more than 70,000 square meters to 160,000 square meters. A large part will be made up of Rohanský Park. This will be created on a new island between the existing flow of the Vltava and a newly constructed river canal, which will be part of flood protection measures," Boháč stated. He mentioned that the Vltava bank should be significantly excavated, creating additional space for water to spread during floods.
The extension of Urxova Street, according to Boháč, will allow the construction of a new bridge between Karlín and Holešovice in the future. The final design of the bridge will be decided in the coming months. "In 2024, a pedestrian and cyclist bridge between Karlín and Holešovice, with access to Štvanice Island, is expected to be completed. It will be named HolKa, after the names of the two districts it connects," Boháč added.
According to him, plans include planting 600 new trees in the streets, and the number of surface parking spaces will double to 1,170. The new residential buildings will have underground garages.
Given the increase in population, according to Boháč, it is necessary to build a new elementary school. "The urban study from 2018 clearly defines the area where it is to be created. This building plot is part of the multi-phase Rohan City project, which operates with an area of nearly 200,000 square meters," he added. The specific form and method of funding will be decided after discussions between the city, the district, and the private investor, which is developer Sekyra Group.
The exhibition titled Rohanský Island: New Karlín? is being held from today at the Center for Architecture and Urban Planning (CAMP). It will run until December 20. In addition to information from a 24-meter wide projection, a 1:1000 scale model will also be on display. The exhibition also includes touch screens with information about individual construction projects.
