Prague - The Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) will announce a competition for the design of the new Maniny Park and the overall future appearance of Rohanský and Libeňský islands. This was decided today by city councilors. Deputy Mayor Petr Hlaváček (for TOP 09) told reporters that the dialogue will probably last for a year to a year and a half, and the park should then be developed in phases over the next eight years.
"One of the most significant citywide parks will be created, which will definitely bring great added value in relation to the river," said the deputy. The area of Rohanský Island was a riverbed until the first half of the last century, which was later filled in. The newly created areas were used for industrial and storage purposes.
On Rohanský Island, the Sekyra Group is building a new residential district. The city plans not only to create a park by the river but also to reconstruct the blind arm of the Vltava River, which will be part of flood protection. The competitive dialogue will also include the overall concept of the riverside area from the Hlávkův Bridge to the territory north of the Libeňský Bridge.
The competition will take the form of a so-called competitive dialogue, during which competitors meet in workshops with representatives of city and other institutions or landowners. Hlaváček stated that interested parties can apply until May 20, after which the jury will select the advancing teams, and the first joint workshop will take place in September. According to the deputy, the format of the competitive dialogue has the advantage of better communication. "Teams work in parallel, they are constantly confronted with various opinions, in this case, from water managers, landscape architects, and other stakeholders," he said.
The city is also currently building a footbridge that will connect Holešovice and Karlín across Štvanice Island. In addition to the Karlín side, the other bank of the Vltava in Holešovice is also set to undergo improvements, where a reconstruction of the embankment is planned, along with the creation of a promenade, new crossings, and barrier-free stops. The city is also considering the construction of the so-called Rohanský Bridge between Karlín and Holešovice, however, no decision has yet been made regarding its construction.
