Brno - The Údolní Street in Brno was reopened to tram traffic this evening after a year of renovations; cars will be able to pass through starting May 1. On this occasion, the transport company, in collaboration with the Brno Observatory and Planetarium, launched a newly renovated K3 tram with a special space-themed interior, as well as a Vario tram adorned with observatory designs, since the line ends at the observatory.
The reconstruction involved the section between Údolní 50 and the turn to Kraví hora street. It spanned approximately 800 meters, during which repairs included the replacement of rails, side panels, large-format panels, overhead wiring, and the installation of new traction masts that will also serve as mounts for public lighting fixtures. The investment by the Brno City Transport Company amounted to 81.3 million CZK.
"The reopening of Údolní Street is good news for everyone who travels through this part of the city daily. I am pleased that we managed to complete the construction on time and that we will have one less traffic closure in Brno," stated the Mayor of Brno, Markéta Vaňková (ODS). The mayor took a ride on the tram once.
The ceremonial opening of the tram track section was themed around a journey to space, which line number four metaphorically represents due to its endpoint at the observatory. For the inaugural ride, they dispatched a newly repaired K3 tram with a special space-themed interior and a Vario tram with observatory designs. Symbolically, a man dressed as an astronaut traveled in them, with whom interested parties could take selfies, taking full advantage of the opportunity. Interestingly, one of the trams also served as a wedding getaway for newlyweds from Brno.
After the ceremonial ride, there are plans to restore tram line 4 to the Míru Square. The entire route to Obřany will be operational again after more than a year and a half, as the Valchařská Street and Maloměřický Bridge were also under reconstruction.
In recent years, Brno has repaired several major streets, such as Husova, Milada Horáková, Minská, Horova, Pionýrská, and Valchařská. Currently, the section of Cejl and Zábrdovická Street, including Zábrdovický Bridge, is being repaired. In the coming years, repairs are planned for the second part of Údolní, as well as Benešova, Štefánikova, and Veveří.
