The Architectural Institute in Prague (ARCHIP), the first Czech private university of architecture, has begun its first academic year at the Veletržní palác. Currently, ARCHIP is accepting applications for its 3-year Bachelor's program for the year 2012/2013. The deadline is January 31, 2012. The plan to establish a private university of architecture in Prague, which originated in 2005 among a group of architects led by Martin Roubík (1949–2008) and Regina Loukotová, became a reality this October. ARCHIP is the only architecture school in Central Europe that offers a complete Bachelor's program in English. More than 20 students representing 10 nationalities from 4 continents are enrolled in the first year. The ARCHIP premises are located on the ground floor of the Veletržní palác, a well-known functionalist building designed by architects Oldřich Tyl and Josef Fuchs. The palace was completed in 1929 and at the time expressed admiration from none other than Le Corbusier for its style and scale. Currently, the building houses the National Gallery. The faculty includes leading Czech architects and renowned figures from the fields of history, theory, and visual arts. The architectural design studios are led by Zdeněk Fránek, Jan Schindler, and Jaroslav Wertig. In the first year, teaching is also provided by Adam Gebrian and Osamu Okamura, among others. The teaching concept is based on integrating architecture with other disciplines and addresses previously neglected areas such as landscape architecture, urbanism, shaping public space, and heritage conservation. The study emphasizes the use of architectural models, teamwork, presentation, discussion, and debate. The teaching itself is supplemented by additional activities, including a recent visit by students from Iowa State University (USA). Regina Loukotová, the rector of ARCHIP, also led an architectural workshop in Egypt at the end of October. ARCHIP is preparing more international contacts and events. In addition to studying, the school also organizes public lectures in English, which began in October. The speakers include representatives from the Czech Republic and other countries. The admission process is conducted electronically, with exams based on a portfolio of artistic works, including a motivation letter. ARCHIP awards scholarships of 90%, 60%, and 30% of tuition fees to the best candidates, according to the evaluation and recommendations of the admission committee.
